friday, in which all goes as planned

i'm going to call this day a success.

yesterday, it was decided that william and i would take henry to school, say goodbye, and leave.  his teachers would keep him safe, entertained, fed, and once he became tired, try putting him down for a nap (his first official outdoor pram nap!).  then they would call me once he woke up and william and i would come and pick him up.

and that is what happened!

we brought henry to school and stayed with him for 5 or 10 minutes.  when it was time for us to leave, i told henry goodbye.  he looked around and found a teacher and said, "beh beh" (bye bye) and waved at her, as if to say, "my mom and i go everywhere together."  but, he was not devastated when she, not i, picked him up and i, not he and i, left the room.  william remarked on the fact that he had the burley all to himself.  it was sort of a strange feeling for both of us.  no henry.

we went home and first things first, had a battle.  the emperator was jailed, as was another (nameless) bad guy.  at one point, when our good guys were trying to disarm the emperator, and we were "shooting" our weapons at his light sabre to knock it out of his hand ("pow pow!" "bam bam!"), i said in a panicked voice, "it's not working!" and william said, "that's because we're only making noise!"  ah, the very definition of common sense.  then we played memory-- william won, 8 pairs, to my 4.  we went downstairs and i did some laundry and made lunch while he watched his "45 minutes."  (his daily allotment of cartoons.)  then we read lots of books.  something we hardly ever do during the day, because, like battles and memory, it's something that's difficult to do with a 14 month old running around.  it was really enjoyable to spend quality, uninterrupted time with william.  i will admit that i started anticipating the phone call around 10:15 a.m. (while we were still doing battles), but i didn't let it get in the way, except that i obsessively carried the smurf phone around with me, not knowing how loud the ring was, or was it on vibrate? or silent mode? and not knowing how to test it.  at times, william and i both wondered aloud what henry was doing.  i think we both missed him.  they did not call until well after 2:00.  not only had henry napped, but he had taken something like a two and a half hour nap-- something he never does for me.  go figure.  we picked him up and it was so nice to be reunited with him.

monday we do it again, only this time, william stays at school too.  he says he doesn't want to go and i anticipate this resistance will hold steady through monday morning (and perhaps subsequent mornings), but i'm hopeful that he will soon see the benefits of it.  it will be strange going home alone.  fortunately i will not have too much time to dwell on it, as i will be dashing off to my first danish language lesson, hopefully, with a completed homework assignment in hand.

this is unrelated, but we received this picture the other day and i love it, so i wanted to share it.  from william's birthday.... thanks, deedee!
