every snowy day is a new adventure

today had everything.  wind, snow, and therefore snow blowing into my eyes, so that i now know it is possible to ride through snow, peeking out from one, not completely closed eyelid.  it also had roads that have not seen the heartless blade of a snowplow in at least a day, or so it seemed.  it's messy out there.  i watched a guy slowly tip his scooter over, just as i'd done forty minutes earlier with my own bike.  but i'd caught myself and he didn't.  greg walked his bike and burley up the hill that gets us out of our neighborhood this morning, and i walked it back down the hill in the afternoon.  you quickly learn that brown slush is your friend, or at least, not the enemy.  it's the layer of snow that prevents your tires from making contact with the pavement that can really turn your efforts into a comical routine.  i told myself as we worked to get the guys to school that i was not going to class today, but then went anyway.  grit or perseverance or just knowing that the worst roads were already behind me.   and later i had to make a stop at the bank, so here you can see the pedestrian street...

in class we talked about the traditional dress of our 'homelands.'  when i said that the u.s. doesn't have a 'national' outfit, people suggested cowboy hats and lassos.  so i told them about hats made of cheese, and as i sat looking up at the images on google after my teacher searched for 'wisconsin cheeseheads' and thought too about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, i realized what a sense of humor the u.s. has.

here is a picture of our backyard.  you can compare with yesterday's photo to get a measurement of the snow that accumulated in the time between...

these plastic lawn chairs are starting to resemble cozy lazy boys...

after my workout getting home from class, i was sort of a slug and didn't do my homework, so now, at 10:30, i should consider doing it.

sigh.
