road trip

another rainy day here, but back in time we're on our great cruise around the midwest till we park ourselves in wisconsin for the last half of our trip.  but that doesn't all happen in this post.  this post is just a little bit about ice cream and sidewalk chalk and lakes and cousins and school gyms and fun fairs and anniversaries and family and race cars and popsicles.  in other words, all-american (oh sure, some of that stuff is universal) summer, which is what i was going for...

starting the post in michigan, ending it in indianapolis...

when you're four and eating ice cream...

vs. when you are seven and eating ice cream...

just visiting some chickens...

and pigs...

(surely all those animals are growing up to have a nice, long, healthy life...that's what i'm telling myself.)

through the fields...

at the lake...

sidewalk chalk face mask...

excuse me while i indulge in having both boys in the same frame as i post these next few photos...

it was a grown-up cousins reunion for greg at the lake.  hopefully someone else got a better picture of them (and photoshopped in the one (grown-up cousin) missing (as there are two in that generation who are still kids)...

next generation... minus a few...

celebrating an anniversary and deciphering the equation on the cake...

to indianapolis now... and more cousins...

and two of the best uncles there are...

and two of the best aunts...

indianapolis is not complete without some nod to the 500...

i notice this car that looks very much like it had a danish sponsor, or danish-turned-american sponsor, since the o would normally be an ΓΈ...

this gym.  i loved it.  it could have been mine as a kid...

and look... more of denmark in indianapolis... (top row, fourth flag to the left)

and here too-- fred = peace in danish; vrede = anger in danish (though i think it means 'peace' in dutch-- more likely what they were going for)

william tossing the ball into the hula hoop at the school fair...

an uncle hard at work at the office...

popsicles and tricycles...

that's it for today.  the next set of photos is taken on a different camera phone.  the phone i used for the remainder of the u.s. trip.  we'll see if they look any better than these.  i think my danish phone and its camera are starting to peter out (see cousins photo for example).

They tell a great (all American) story!

If you took as many photos in Denmark -- of people in their homes, of school gyms, of ice cream and school fairs -- could you (absent any flags) tell that they were from Denmark? Are there certain identifiers? Because these surely leave no doubt as to the location.
