it was mostly cold and breezy and overcast today until dinner time when it was finally warm enough, in time to eat outside. they have the most fantastic cabbage varieties here. i don't know if you can do this with the unwieldy round cabbages in the u.s., but here we just saute them in some butter with salt and pepper and they are delicious and mild in flavor. were we just not taking advantage of cooking cabbage in this way in the u.s. or am i right in imagining that it just wouldn't taste as good? but of course, who can answer that, unless you've compared?
tonight william and i went for an owl walk. something he did a lot of in madison on winter nights. into the woods, our chances at seeing one were slim. it's still light out until about 9:00, and while people agree that owls do live here in denmark (7 species to be præcis), there's nothing to say they live in the little stretch of woods on the top of the hill looking out above the fjord. oh but still, i loved that he wanted to do an owl walk and that i was the one who got to go with him.
here, before the walk... a treat...
he said "maybe it was a misunderstanding" when he took my cup of ice cream after he'd eaten most of his. |
getting ready for the walk...
pj's, tennis shoes, fleece, flashlight, head lamp, check. |
in the burley...
to the nearest forest...
looking out for owls...
no owls here...
but goats, on the way home... and sheep, farther down the hill...
and back home to get warm...
he fell asleep to hans brinker or the silver skates, learning about holland.

Beautiful walk! And the fireplace comes alive! I tell you, you're going to miss that house when (eventually) you move on.
[We have owls right outside our bedroom window, but they don't start their night noises until maybe 2 or 3 at night. As if it has to be absolutely still. And then the chorus begins. I never imagined I could actually spot them -- maybe some night...]
Hi Nina,
You're probably right... I think I will miss, at the very least, this room.
Yes-- if you're ever awake late one night, maybe you can go out there and spot one in the wintertime!
