counting to six hundred

i know if i link to these articles you're just going to think i'm morbid.  yesterday it was cynicism over surviving cancer.  today, sharing stories about dying and medical ID bracelets linked to advanced directives.  what sort of impression i'm giving you about myself, i don't know, but this is important stuff folks.  i just have to put it out there, even if it does turn me into a debbie downer.

so, today's first article:  'letting go'.  let's face it-- unless you and all your close family members get struck down by all the strike-downable man- and nature-made objects out there, there's a good chance these issues are going to be relevant someday.  when to say "enough life-saving treatments," when to focus on the quality of time left instead of the quantity.  it's a long article, but well worth it for the importance of the topic.

then i just happened to see this article in my FB feed tonight before opening the blog, and because it was on the same topic, decided to share it too.  because you might decide you want to get one of these bracelets.  you never know.

in other events, can you guess what medication side-effect this is evidence of...

sweaters, thrown off like big, hairy spiders, all throughout the house...

yep, the good, old-fashioned hot flash.  i know you think i'm going to be bitter about these, but honestly, and i'm typing this as i'm feeling one coming on, and about to pull my sweater off to... okay, it's off... be abandoned with the other one, but i don't mind them.  given that weather here right now is cool and windy, the solution (throwing open a window) is just so pleasant that i can't complain.  it's about the best side-effect free treatment for a side-effect out there.  (i can't speak to hot flashes in the summer.  expect i'll be able to do that in a few months.)

and lastly, something really sweet.  little h man with his friends.  he's the one in the bright blue hat...

and now the boys are hoping for a "little thinker" story via this computer.  greg told william to count to 600 and he claims to have done so, so i best end here.  goodnight!

Halfway through Gawande's beautifully written article, I have to "let it go." Too late at night! Gotta get off this computer! But, oh, how thankful I am that he writes so well, that we have him to articulate exactly what's important, and exactly how hard this is. Thank you for giving us Gawande!
